Terriers take SU in Varsity and 2V; 3V gets a win in Boston.

It was a tough morning for the SU women’s team on the Charles River in its opening races for Coach Justin Moore. The Boston University Terriers took back the Kittle Cup with a wire-to-wire win over the Orange varsity eight. The Terriers grabbed a couple of seats off the start and built to nearly a length lead at the halfway point.

The Orange never let the Terriers get away, pushing back to close to less than a length at the finish but did not have enough to overtake BU.

The racing conditions included 30 degree temperatures and a head wind of 10-15 knots in the second half of the race course.

In the 2V race SU got off to an early lead but the Terriers caught up around the first 500 meters and made a move to open half a length near the halfway point. With 500 to go, BU made it a length and added a length of open water down the stretch to win it going away.

The Orange 3V got a win to begin the day, beating BU across the line by open water.

Syracuse’s Varsity Four was second to BU’s “A” four but defeated the Terriers’ “B” boat.

Men Elect Captains

Over the Spring Training Trip in Clemson, South Carolina the Men's team thought long and hard about who to choose as a Captain, or in this case Captains, to lead the team through the Spring Season.

Congratulations to senior members Vince Berry and Mike Gennaro, Captain's of the Syracuse Men's Team for the 2011 Season. Both Mike and Vince have been members of the Varsity 8 since their sophomoreyear and together this fall dominated, and successfully navigated, a chaotic field of small boats in the Men's Pair at the Princeton Chase after winning the race 4+ earlier in the day.

We look forward to having them lead our team into some great racing this spring.

Spring Training Trip Blog Post

courtesy of SU Athletics:
posting from Miranda Williams

The spring training trip this year began with a 13 hour bus ride to get to our destination, Clemson, South Carolina. Feeling excited to see some more of the states, and pumped for a week of rowing, we set off from a cold Syracuse during the night. By the time we woke the sun was shining and we were seeing a southern landscape! With a few stops along the way, we were able to have a chat with some locals and loved hearing their real southern accents!

Once we arrived, we settled into our rooms and headed down to the training site, which is beautiful! With the sun shining on huge stretch of water, surrounded by trees and amongst some of our competition, the atmosphere felt competitive and exciting. We rigged the boats we hadn’t seen since Florida, and as freshman learnt some new tricks to the trade from upperclassmen and coaches, then we finally got our boats on the water. Although it was a little wavy, and we were feeling pretty tired, it felt awesome getting back into boats.

After the row we got to eat at Clemson dining hall, and see some of their campus, and views of the pretty town. It was great seeing another college campus, and experiencing again a different American culture to the northeast. After dinner we returned to our hotel for a team meeting. We spoke about the week, and as always Justin inspired and excited us, not only for this week but also for the upcoming season. I can’t wait to see how this week goes, and am so excited for the racing to begin!

2011 SARA Dues Now Due

March 9, 2011

Dear Syracuse Rowing Alums and Friends of SU Rowing-

As the weather warms and the crews take to the water, it’s time to start thinking about racing season. While the crews and coaches are responsible for what happens on the water, SARA works behind the scenes to support your men’s and women's teams with purchases of equipment, supporting trips, senior awards, live/online race broadcasts, event hospitality and regular updates through the Orange Oar newsletter, the SARA blog and other social media.

These activities are supported directly and solely by SARA membership dues. On behalf of the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association (SARA) Executive Committee, I hope that you will take a moment to renew your SARA membership either through the mail, or by paying online through PayPal.

Annual dues are $50. If you are a graduate from 2005-2010, the rate is $25. We have also instituted a “Friends of SARA” membership category for SU athlete parents and friends. This new “Friends of SARA” membership rate is $50. We would also like you to be aware that there is a “Lifetime Membership” dues rate of $500. A list of current Lifetime members is attached to this email.

For your convenience, we have established a PayPal portal which will allow you to renew your membership easily online. The link is on the right side of the SARA blog (www.syracusealumnirowing.blogspot.com)

If you prefer to pay by check, please mail to:
