Conlan Cup Race Report

SU men's rowing head coach Dave Reischman has circulated his race report from the Conlan Cup. Here are some excerpts:

CONDITIONS:  Cross headwind in the first 1000m, 8-12 variable, and pretty good conditions in the bypass canal in front of the boathouse.

VARSITY EIGHT: Most crews will have a race during the year where they take a step backward or feel like they don't race up to their capabilities. We executed very well throughout the week and the guys were very excited to race on Saturday.  Unfortunately we were not able to execute on the race course.  It was a pretty disappointed group of guys when we met after the racing.

We were pretty even with BU and Columbia as we shifted to our 37.  The rhythm wasn't quite there as we shifted to our base rating and it didn't look like the hull had our usual surge to it. We have an emergency "rhythm check" built into our race plan in case this happens.  Senior Coxswain Mike Sparta made the call shortly after the shift pace.  The intent is to take a deep breath, relax, and create the rhythm we need to move the boat effectively.  Mike said he felt more effort go into the rowing but the timing and rhythm didn't change much.  Things deteriorated the further we moved down the course as BU and Columbia continued to move away.

SECOND VARSITY EIGHT:  BU has a lot of depth and are very strong top to bottom.  The results from their earlier races have indicated their isn't much difference in speed between their varsity and JV.   This is one of the top ranked JV's in the league and they moved out early and kept going.

Our crew has been working on consistency down the race course and the goal of their racing was to be a bit more poised and mature about how they approached the race. Against Columbia, they kept their composure in the first 1000m and they were neck and neck with them through the 1000m mark. We had ½ length with 500m to go and grabbed a few more seats as we closed out the race.  A good step in the right direction for these guys and we need to continue to make progress in this direction.

THIRD VARSITY EIGHT: This has been a tough spring for the 3V. We have had a some injuries and a lot of illness in the top two boats this spring and that has meant the 3V has had a different group of guys almost every day.  These guys have done a nice job of rolling with all the changes. We switched from a port stroked lineup to a starboard stroked lineup due to a few key guys helping the varsity and JV lineups in the middle of the previous week and the guys responded well.  They kept in contact with a very strong BU 3V crew for most of the way down the race course-just loosing contact with them in the last 500m.

FOURTH VARSITY EIGHT: Our 4V did not handle all the changes to line-ups last week quite as well the 3V.  The cross wind was strongest for this race and the conditions in the first 1000m were definitely more challenging than any of the other races.  Having said that the BU 4V and 5V were clearly less effected by the conditions than we were.  Again, crews usually have at least one race during the spring where they race out of character.  We are hoping this was the race for this crew and they will get back on track soon.

NEXT UP:  We will be entering a two week period of final exams this next week and we next take to the race course in two weeks up in Hanover, NH for the Packard Cup against Dartmouth.  We will be racing on FRIDAY, MAY 9 AT AROUND 3:00 PM IN THE AFTERNOON.  We are racing on Friday so that our seniors can get back for graduation weekend and spend time celebrating this achievement with their families.  I will send out more information on the race as we get closer.

SU Women Sweep Duke at Monticello Invitational

The No. 17 Syracuse women's rowing team swept Duke in all its early session races before losing to host and No. 5 Virginia in its second session races at the Monticello Invitational on Saturday on Lake Monticello.

"This was an opportunity for our team to race against one of the nation's best in Virginia," women's head rowing coach Justin Moore said. "Our women used the opportunity really well and realized what they need to do to reach that level. It is essential that we line up against teams of this caliber because that is where we are going."

Chancellor Syverud Takes the Longbranch Exit and...

Visits the Boathouse.

Saturday morning SU Chancellor Kent Syverud dropped by the Ten Eyck Boathouse to take in the Conlan Cup during the first spring racing season of his tenure.

Appointed by the University’s Board of Trustees in September 2013, he assumed the leadership post in January 2014, becoming the 12th leader of the University since its founding in 1870. Chancellor Syverud came to Syracuse University from Washington University in St. Louis, where he served as Dean and Ethan A.H. Shepley Distinguished University Professor since 2006. Prior to that, he served eight years as Dean at Vanderbilt Law School.

Syverud earned a bachelor’s degree magna cum laude from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in 1977, a law degree magna cum laude from the University of Michigan in 1981, and a master’s degree in economics from the University of Michigan in 1983.

In this photo, Chancellor Syverud is chatting with (left to right) men's head rowing coach Dave Reischman and former men's head rowing coach Bill Sanford '63. Given the chancellor's background, perhaps topics of conversation included, "How's the Big House compare with the Carrier Dome?" and, "What's a Hoya?"

More on the Conlan Cup

The No. 16 Syracuse men's rowing team's varsity eight finished third in its lone home race of the season on Saturday morning at the James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse as No. 10 Boston University won the Conlan Cup and Lusins Trophy in the three-way regatta between the Orange, Terriers and No. 12 Columbia.

In the V8 race, BU took control early and never relinquished its lead as it held of the Lions and Orange for the win. The Terriers covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:03.4 with Columbia second in 6:05.1 and SU third in 6:14.2.

$13,000 after 500 Meters in Endowment Annual Campaign

We are 500 hours down (20 days) into our 2,000 hour piece and we have already raised almost $13,000! A special thanks to those from the class of 1965, 1967, 1980 and 2002 for the leadership gifts. We have received 9 donations  that are between $500 and $5,000. So far, we already have 20 separate class years contributing in this year’s SARA Men’s Crew Endowment Annual Campaign. While 8 class year teams are off and racing, we still have 4 class years teams still sitting on the blocks. It is time for everyone to put their oar in the water and get your check book out.

The class years of 1980 – 1984 lead both in number of contributions and dollars contributed. Can anyone catch them (as they were 2 years ago by the class of 1990 – 1994)? Remember shirts for the winning class years. We cross the line on June 18, 2014 at 8am.

We will continue to give update every 10 days via email and the SARA blog. Below is the link to or address to donate to the SARA Men’s Crew Endowment. If there are any questions, please contact Joe Kieffer ’88 – 267-228-1341  or jkieffer@email.com. Thank you in advance for your support of Syracuse Rowing.

Goes Trophy Race Report

Men's head rowing coach Dave Reischman has distributed his comments on Saturday's race against Cornell and Navy. Here are some excerpts:

Conditions:  Moderate head wind that became more of a factor in the second 1000m.  All in all a decent day for racing, though.

Varsity Eight:  In our earlier races we were falling behind in the first 250m and our plan was to try to get out and run with Cornell and Navy in the early going.  I thought we did a nice job of that.  At the 500m mark when we started to loose ground to both crews, Cornell was rowing 38 1/2 to 39 spm, with Navy at 37, and our crew at 35 to 35 1/2.  If you were listening to John Nicholson’s call on the internet, you know we made a nice push back into Navy in the 3rd 500m, but we spent a lot of energy doing it.  We couldn’t change our speed anymore in the last 500m and Navy pulled out to a full length by the line.  Cornell was a length in front of them.  As bitter as it is to lose this race I thought it was our best effort down the race course to this point in the season.  We just need to keep finding more speed.

Second Varsity Eight:  This race was a tale of the two thousands for our 2nd varsity crew.  In the first 1000m we came out of the stake boats hard and settled into an aggressive rhythm and did a great job of moving the boat. We just didn’t have the same level of attack in the second 1000m as we did in the first.  Finding the consistency we need to stick a rhythm for the full 2K is going to be a key to this boat moving forward.

Third Varsity Eight: I thought it was a pretty decent battle.  We would cut in to the Navy lead by a few seats and then they would counter back with a move of their own.  We kept on them all the way to the finish and I really liked the effort this crew put in.  Navy usually has very good depth and I was happy to see our young guys stay with them.

Fourth Varsity Eight:   Navy’s depth really showed in this race as they got out early and kept going down the course.  Our guys looked a little scrambled against Cornell, but then as they started the second 1000m seemed to relax and find their rhythm.  By 500m to go we were even with Cornell and moved through in the last 500m to about 3/4 of a length up on them.   A decent effort from the 4V.

Next Up:   This weekend we race at home against BU and Columbia. You can find directions HERE.

Sunday Results from Clemson Invite

The Department of Athletics Communications has posted the final results and analysis from the weather-shortened Clemson Invite.

After finishing fifth in its first race Sunday morning, Syracuse's top boat, the varsity eight, finished the day with its strongest performance of the weekend, finishing second to No. 15 Wisconsin. The second varsity eight, after a disappointing finish on Saturday, turned in a pair of inspired performances on Sunday, finishing second in both its races. SU's varsity four continued its stellar rowing, winning its only race of the day, while the third varsity eight placed third in its race.

SU Women Out-Race Seeding at Clemson

The No. 18 Syracuse women's rowing team out-performed its seeding in two of three NCAA races on day one of the Clemson Invitational on Saturday.

The Department of Athletics Communications has posted more info on the ongoing Clemson Invite on cuse.com, including comments from women's head rowing coach Justin Moore.

"To out-race our seeding, finishing with open water on Dartmouth and overlapping decks with Radcliffe," Moore said "This was probably the best race we've had in the O'Leary Cup in quite some time. We had a real barn-burner of a grouping and felt really good about how the team raced."

More Info on Goes Trophy

The Department of Athletic Communications has posted more info on yesterday's Goes Trophy on cuse.com.

Recapping yesterday's 1V race, men's head rowing Coach Dave Reischman said that Cornell got out to an early lead: "The crews maintained their positions throughout the duration of the race after Cornell established a lead in the opening 250 meters with Navy second and SU third, though the Orange gained on the Midshipmen in the second half of the race.

"I thought we rowed a good a third 500, Reischman said. "We got down in the second 500. We then made some in-roads into them, but didn't have anything left down the stretch."

Coach's Comments on the San Diego Crew Classic

Syracuse men's rowing head coach Dave Reischman has distributed his post-race report. Here are excerpts:

If you are looking to gain some “six boats across” racing experience and put your crew in to a couple of good battles down the race course you can usually get it in San Diego.  The racing is a two day format with heats on Saturday and Finals on Sunday.

In the heat on Saturday, Cal has an outstanding crew this year and we suspected they would be out front. With some good work early in the race we thought we could control the other crews and finish second. What we did not plan on was one of the guys losing his seat and spending the first six strokes of the start scrambling to climb back on. Better now than later in the year.  I thought the guys did a good job of staying composed and, although we were well down after the start, quickly found a nice rhythm and moved into second about 750m in the race. The cadence was a bit low, 34ish, but there was good length and the boat was moving.  Cal was moving steadily away and we were able to keep our eye on the rest of the crews all the way down the course to finish in second place and advance to the grand final.

Some crews have the experience and skill to row the higher cadences down the race course early in the season and other crews take a while to develop the proper rhythm to do it. Most crews at this race are at 36-37 with some of the “warm weather” crews even rowing 38. Water time in February helps. This crew has very good endurance but we really haven’t done a lot of cadence work yet.  We had a much better start for the final and settled in at 35 spm to try to grind out the middle part of the race.  We were in 6th place coming through the 1000m but still had a good shot at 4th.  The guys really did a nice job in the 3rd 500m to get even with GWU and UBC and come level for fourth with about 500m to go but we spent a lot of energy doing it.  When it came time to sprint we didn’t have the legs left to change the boat speed and we finished 6th just about a 1/3 of a length down on GWU and UBC.

We will continue to work on developing our racing cadence and we certainly need to have a little more juice off the line.  The last 500m will come as we get closer to Sprints and the IRA.

All in all a good trip for us.  A special thanks to the San Diego area alums who came out to support us at the race.  Hopefully we can get back to the Crew Classic in the near future!

Next up for us is the Goes Trophy.  We are down in Ithaca this year and both Cornell and Navy have been racing well in the early season.  Racing starts at 9:00 am and you can find directions and other info on the racing as it becomes available at CORNELL ATHLETICS.

Moore Pleased with Cornell Scrimmage

When the Syracuse women's rowing team scrimmaged with Cornell Saturday, the result was a series of pieces separated by very narrow margins.

The 1V, 2V, 3V, A four and B four for each school did four 1,000-meter pieces and four 500-meter pieces in a day that head coach Justin Moore said took into account what both crews needed this early in the season.

"We got really fortunate with unbelievable water, and the crews were really well matched. The coxswains did a great job, and I think we had a really productive day."

The times bore out Moore's observation that the crews were evenly matched. In the 1V's 1,000-meter pieces, the slimmest margin was 0.2 seconds, and the greatest margin was 0.6 seconds. Cornell took three out of four 1,000-meter pieces. Syracuse won three out of four 500-meter pieces.

The 2V times were similar.
