PRINCETON, N.J. – USRowing is pleased to announce the winners of its 2010 Annual Awards, the organization announced on Thursday.

The Jack Franklin Service Award is given to a referee for his or her lifetime contribution to the sport. This year’s recipient is Tom Lotz. A graduate of Syracuse University and a participant at the 1956 Olympic Trials, Lotz has been a licensed referee since 1990. Over the years, Lotz has served as the Southeast regional representative to the USRowing Referee Committee, chair of the USRowing Referee Committee and as an instructor at the USRowing Referee College. He has coordinated numerous programs that have increased the number of new referees in the Southeast region and developed a core of referees in Texas that are self-sufficient for area regattas. Lotz has refereed at 20 IRA Regattas and has served as the lead umpire at the Head of the Charles. He is a founding member of the Bay Area Rowing Club of Houston and was the sports director for the Houston 2012 Foundation, which prepared Houston’s bid for the 2012 Olympics. Navy Ball - in Photos

Wow. The Navy Ball returned with a bang. What a night. Nearly 100 Alums from all decades came back to campus for a night of fun, frolic and a few misty moments. *sniff* The night highlights included a video montage by the class of 1970 and recollections of this great crew by Coach Bill Sanford. A buffet dinner and a night on the dance floor (followed by assorted after parties) completed the evening.

Huge props and major thanks to SARA Board Member Chip Gibson who put this night together.

If you were at the event and have photos to share, please send them to me at tracyrsmith123(at)gmail.com and I'll post them. THANK YOU to Tom Darling for these photos below....

Class of 1988 Boat Dedication

5 members of the SU class of 1988 were on hand this past weekend for the ceremonial christening of the new Hudson 8+ named in their honor.
Gordon Bain, Joe Kieffer, Rich MacNamara, Eric Heitman and Bob Price did the duties, with a little help from Otto the Orange.
Thank you Class of 1988!

SARA Alumni Weekend - 2010

Class of 1970 Reunion Row

Doctor Bruce Chamberlain Inducted into the SARA Hall of Fame

It was a huge honor for SARA to induct the SARA Co-Founder Dr. Bruce Chamberlain into the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association Hall of Fame on Saturday (Nov. 6).

Doctor Chamberlain's family and friends gathered for this ceremony at the boathouse on a chilly (and briefly snowy) Liverpool morning. SARA Board Member and Orange Oar Editor John Nicholson presided over the ceremony.

We are grateful for the beautiful reflections and anecdotes about Dr. Chamberlain provided by the venerable Bill Sanford. Longtime SARA Board Member and Dr. Chamberlain's friend Bob Donabella had the honor of presenting the Award.

A beautiful tribute to the one that started it all....

Thank you Dr. Chamberlain for your unwavering support of Syracuse rowing.

Mark of the Oarsman II

Ok, all you alums. We are now ready to get your insights, inputs, and information for the new edition of Mark of the Oarsman.

John Nicholson and I are tasked with writing the book, but think of us more as facilitators - you have the memories, the pictures, the stories and opinions. And that's what's going to make Mark II a great read.

Here's what you need to do.

Send me an email - jpadudaAthealthstrategyassocDOTcom and I'll send you the poop on how to contribyoot.

Our fearless leader Tracy has given us the directive to have the draft completed by September 1, 2011. That's ten months away, and if it isn't done by then I'm going into the Witless Protection Plan.

So, shoot me an email and we'll get on it. It will be easy, fun, and painless - and you'll get props in the foreword as a contributor, too.

We can't do it without you.

from NZ....

add in some snow and it could be Onondaga.

Sheila Roock ('85)....Renaissance Woman

Hard as it may be to believe, Syracuse rowing alums' talent extends to activities other than those involving propelling a shell at warp speed.

Case in point - Sheila Roock (aka "Shelly Rock") - class of 1985.

If you're in Syracuse for the SARA Alumni Weekend, why not stop by to see Sheila who will be a featured exhibitor at the Syracuse Art Mart, opening Friday, November 5. The Art Mart is an art and fine crafts show of nearly 50 artists, selling original paintings, photographs, jewelry, pottery, and more.

(personal note: Sheila's beautiful ceramic bowls greet me and my cereal each morning. They are true works of art.)

The Opening Reception is Fri., Oct. 5 4pm – 7pm, but the sale starts at 11am. Regular hours are 11am-4pm Mon – Sat.

Location:
The Art Mart takes place in the Greenhouse at City Hall Commons:
201 E. Washington Street in Downtown Syracuse - (Adjacent to Hanover Square, near where Washington St. meets Montgomery St.)

Questions or to contact Sheila, call 215-514-4457.
